Lady Patriots Claimed Their 6th VCC Tournament Championship in 7 Years

2017, March 6 – The Amelia Academy Lady Patriots claimed their 6th VCC tournament championship in 7 years before losing in the VIS Division 3 state semifinals to end their season.

The Lady Patriots defeated Brunswick Academy 71-36 in the VCC semifinals at Richard Bland College on February 24. They made a season-high 15 threes, including 6 by Becca A. and 3 by Hannah F. Becca led the way with 24 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks. Hannah had 11 points, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Jessica M. had 10 points, including 2 threes, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Monica E. had 7 points and 14 rebounds and Abbi S. had 8 points and 7 rebounds.

On February 25, Amelia Academy jumped out to a halftime lead of 41-22 over Richmond Christian in the VCC finals. They maintained their lead throughout the second half and claimed the VCC tournament title with a 72-56 victory. Hannah led the way with 20 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds. Becca had 18 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Monica had 10 points, 16 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Jessica had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Madison B. had 6 points and 4 rebounds and Abbi had 8 points and 5 rebounds. Becca was named the tournament MVP and Hannah was named to the all-tournament team.

On March 1, Amelia Academy shot lights out in defeating Walsingham Academy in the state quarterfinals. They shot 64% on two-point shots (23-36), 50% from three (8-16) and made all 8 foul shots. It was 38-8 at halftime as Amelia Academy would blow away Walsingham 78-34. Becca and Abbi would score 20 points each. Becca would add 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Abbi had 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Hannah had 15 points and 6 assists. Rachel A. had 12 points and Monica had 9 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 4 steals.

On March 3, the Lady Patriots traveled to Steward School to take on Christ Chapel in the state semifinals. Amelia Academy would lead 15-6 after the first quarter and take a 25-20 lead into the halftime break. The Lady Patriots would lead 37-33 going into the fourth quarter. Christ Chapel would take the lead late only to see Amelia Academy tie the game at 45 with around 30 seconds left. However, Christ Chapel would score the final four points of the game at the foul line to get the 49-45 win.

Hannah led Amelia Academy with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Abbi had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Monica had 10 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. Becca had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. 

The Lady Patriots end the season with a record of 29-3 and the VCC regular season title and VCC tournament championship. Becca was named the VCC Player of the Year, as well as making the all-academic team. Abbi and Monica were named to the VCC First Team and Hannah and Jessica were named to the VCC Second Team. Coach Frank Shanaberger was named VCC Coach of the Year.
