Two Big Victories Last Week for Lady Patriots Basketball

2017, February 13 – The Amelia Academy Lady Patriots got two big victories last week to remain undefeated in the VCC. On Tuesday, they hosted Kenston Forest on Senior Night and wasted no time jumping out to an early 28-7 lead after the first quarter. The offensive onslaught continued in the second quarter as Amelia Academy added 26 more points for a 54-15 lead. The scoring would slow down in the second half and the Lady Patriots would go on to win 80-32.

Becca A. led the way with 27 points, 13 rebounds, 7 steals and 3 assists. Monica E. had 12 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals. Hannah F. had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Abbi S. had 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists and 2 steals. Rachel A. had 8 points, 5 assists and 5 steals. Jessica M. had 8 points, 7 steals, 4 assists, 3 blocks and 2 rebounds. Brianna G. had 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 blocks. As a team, the Lady Patriots had 32 steals and 25 assists, along with making 8 threes.

On Friday night, Amelia Academy traveled to Richmond Christian to face the second-place Warriors. It also was a match-up of the first-ranked and fourth-ranked teams in the VIS D3 state poll. The Lady Patriots would find themselves in an unusual position of being down 15-6 after the first quarter. Amelia Academy would start making some shots midway through the second quarter to cut into the Richmond Christian deficit and trail 29-23 at half.

Amelia Academy went with their full court pressure defense in the second half and forced a quicker tempo. The result was a 20-12 advantage in the third quarter and an eventual 43-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The final quarter would see the score stay within two possessions for most of the way. The Lady Patriots would take the lead at 57-56 on a foul shot by Abbi. On their next possession, Abbi would hit Monica for a driving basket to go ahead 59-56. The Warriors would attempt a three-pointer to tie it in the closing second, but the shot was off the mark. The loose ball kicked out to a Warrior player, but the ball was knocked away and chased down by Becca to secure the victory.

Becca led the Lady Patriots with 22 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists. Monica had 13 points, 16 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Hannah had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Abbi had 5 points, 20 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks. Jessica had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Rachel had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Amelia Academy (23-2 overall, 10-0 in VCC) will close out their regular season with three road games this week. They travel to Fuqua School on Monday, Southampton Academy on Tuesday and then Tidewater Academy on Friday. The VCC tournament begins Monday, February 20 with the quarterfinals. The Lady Patriots will get a first round bye and play the winner of the #4-#5 game in a semifinal game on Friday, February 24 at 3 pm at Richard Bland College. The VCC final is at 12:30 pm on Saturday, February 25 at Richard Bland College.
