Lady Patriots Wrap-up Busy Week of Basketball

2017, January 23 – The Amelia Academy Lady Patriots finished a busy week of basketball by going 3-1, with their only loss to VIS Division 2 defending state champion Miller School. The Lady Patriots hosted Richmond Christian on Tuesday night in a clash of the top two teams in the VCC. Although Richmond Christian jumped out to the early lead, Amelia Academy was able to fight back and tie the score at 14 after the first quarter. The Lady Patriots would outscore the Warriors 19-10 in the second quarter and take a 33-24 lead into halftime. They were able to maintain their advantage in the second half and pulled away for a 66-46 victory.

Jessica M. and Hannah F. led the Lady Patriots with 17 points each. Jessica knocked down 5 three-pointers. Becca A. added 15 points and 16 rebounds. Monica E. had 11 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Abbi S. added 6 points and 12 rebounds to round out the scoring for Amelia Academy.

On Thursday, the Lady Patriots routed Southampton Academy 68-21 with their full court pressure defense and transition offense. Amelia Academy had 30 steals along with 19 assists and had 5 girls in double figures. Rachel A. led all scorers with 15 points. Jessica had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Abbi had 12 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 assists. Becca had 10 points, 7 steals and 6 assists. Hannah had 10 points and 4 rebounds. Monica had 8 points and 8 steals. 

On Friday, Amelia Academy traveled to Steward School to play Miller School in the Steward Invitational. The first half went back and forth with Miller leading 18-16 after the first quarter and still leading 27-23 at the half. Miller stretched their lead to 40-31 after the third quarter before eventually winning 47-35. One of the main differences in the game was from behind the three-point line where Miller School made 9 threes and Amelia Academy was 0-16.

Becca led the Lady Patriots with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. Monica had 8 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Abbi had 8 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. Hannah had 6 points.

The Lady Patriots got back in the win column on Saturday with a 60-47 win over Central Virginia Home School. Amelia Academy used its pressure defense to take a 32-14 lead into halftime. CVHS would try to make a comeback, but the Lady Patriots would hold on for the victory. Becca had 25 points, including 3 threes, 16 rebounds and 7 assists. Monica had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Abbi had 10 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jessica had 3 points and 7 assists. Hannah had 4 points and 3 assists.

The Lady Patriots are now 16-2 overall and 5-0 in the VCC. They will have 4 games again this week: hosting Tidewater Academy on Tuesday, traveling to Virginia Episcopal on Wednesday, hosting Blessed Sacrament on Friday and hosting Fredericksburg Academy on Saturday.
