New Teachers Join AA Faculty

2016, August 29 – “Teaching young children has always been my dream. I’m glad I get to fulfill my dream at Amelia Academy,” said Mary Callahan during her first week of teaching first grade at Amelia Academy.

This sentiment was shared by her fellow new teachers and existing faculty as they welcomed students back for a new year on Aug. 17. “The first days brought great excitement and anticipation, and our teachers have worked tirelessly to prepare for a wonderful year,” said Rodney L. Taylor, Head of School.

Also new to the Lower School is Janelle Jones who will be teaching kindergarten this year. Ms. Jones noted that “there is an atmosphere of togetherness and love at the Academy.”

Both Ms. Callahan and Ms. Jones hold degrees from Longwood University with elementary education endorsements. Originally from Mechanicsville, Ms. Callahan currently resides in Rice, and Ms. Jones is from Chesterfield.

Mrs. Maryrose Leder and Mrs. Shauna Miracle are teaching pre-school this year. “AA is wonderful!” said Mrs. Leder. “It is a fun and intellectually-stimulating environment. . . dedicated to excellence in education. Mrs. Leder brings a wealth of experience in working with young children, most recently at ABC Preschool. Originally from Minnesota, she and her husband live in Amelia and have two grown children.

Mrs. Miracle, an Amelia native, has seven years’ experience teaching children ages three and four. She also appreciates the Academy’s “family-like atmosphere and the relationships with staff and students.” Mrs. Miracle and her husband have three children and live in Amelia.

Ms. Ashley Wells is teaching English and history classes in the Middle and Upper Schools. Currently residing in Midlothian, Ms. Wells is originally from Powhatan. She holds a degree in Psychology and Media Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University.

“I’m new to teaching, and Amelia Academy is a good place to be,” said Ms. Wells. “We have great students and a great faculty.”
Lt. Col. Phillip Amiss, USMC, will serve as co-Athletic Director with Angie Anderson who is also a member of the faculty. Lt. Col. Amiss is an infantry officer who has served throughout the world, including deployments in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. He and his wife Dawn have three children, all of whom are students at the Academy. The family resides in Amelia.
